Koshi Province

Sherpa Family Owned • EASTERN NEPAL

Everest, Makalu and Kangchenjunga

Five of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders rise from Koshi Province, among them Everest, Makalu and Kangchenjunga, which stands on Nepal's eastern border. Koshi is also Namche Bazaar at dusk, juniper smoke at Tengboche Monastery, and the Gokyo valley on a still morning before the clouds come in. Our family has guided in this province for generations. We know its trails and teahouses well, including the shortcuts the maps don't show.

Things Guests Ask Before Booking

Real questions about the Everest side of Nepal.

  • The big peaks of eastern Nepal: Everest and the Khumbu, Makalu, Kanchenjunga and the Arun valley. It is the part of Nepal most people picture first.

  • Most Everest treks begin with the short mountain flight to Lukla, a flight most guests remember. We time flights early, when the weather is calmest.

  • A challenging high-altitude trek rather than a climb. With our acclimatization schedule and steady pacing, it is well within reach of a fit, determined walker.

  • Yes. Gokyo's lakes, Makalu Base Camp and Kanchenjunga offer the same scale with far fewer trekkers, and we guide all three.

  • Autumn has the most stable weather and the clearest views of the year. Spring is the second window, when the Everest climbing expeditions are on the mountain.

  • Acclimatization days are built into every itinerary, and guides who grew up at altitude watch each guest daily and slow the pace when anyone needs it.
