TRAVEL SAFETY
Our promise
Safety in the Himalayas is not a policy we follow; it's something we learned growing up here. Our guides have spent their lives reading altitude, weather, and terrain. They know what a headache at 4,000 meters means, how fast a storm comes in over the Khumbu, and when to turn back. That knowledge is not in a manual. It's inherited. And it's what keeps our guests safe.
How we guide you
Every journey is led by licensed Sherpa guides who were born and raised in the regions they guide. This isn't a credential on a CV, it's a lifetime of knowing how altitude affects the body, which trails hold ice after a storm, and which teahouse owners to trust in an emergency. Your guide isn't just navigating. They're reading the mountain the whole time you're on it.
How we protect you
Altitude sickness is the most common risk on Himalayan treks and the most preventable. Every itinerary we build follows a strict acclimatization schedule based on decades of guiding at elevation:
- Gradual altitude gain
- Rest and acclimatization days
- Guide monitoring and support
- Flexible pacing for comfort
Your health always comes before the schedule. If a guide says we rest, we rest. No exceptions.
How we support you
We operate in some of the most remote terrain in the world. When something goes wrong, and in the mountains, sometimes it does, we are not calling a hotline. We are making decisions on the ground, with people who know this landscape personally:
- Evacuation procedures
- Medical support networks
- Communication systems in remote areas
- Coordination with rescue services if needed
Travel Insurance
All travelers must carry comprehensive insurance, including:
- High-altitude trekking coverage
- Emergency evacuation
- Medical treatment abroad
- Trip interruption protection
Mountain Conditions & Flexibility
Himalayan weather and trail conditions can change. SherpaHolidays may adjust routes, accommodations, or timing when needed for safety. Changes are always communicated clearly, and decisions are made with your well-being as the priority.
Guest Responsibilities
- Follow guide instructions and briefings
- Maintain appropriate fitness for the trip level
- Respect local customs and environmental guidelines
- Inform us of medical conditions in advance
- Travel with required gear and insurance
Respect for Nature & Culture
We live in the communities you'll pass through. The mountains, monasteries, and villages on your itinerary are not just destinations; they're our home. We ask every guest to move through Nepal the way we do: with respect for what's here, care for what's fragile, and awareness that how you travel affects the people who remain after you leave.
Questions About Safety
Safety questions are the best questions. Ask us anything before you book about altitude, fitness requirements, specific trails, or what to do if plans change on the mountain. We'd rather answer twenty questions now than have you uncertain on the trail.
