Long before he was the Buddha, Prince Siddhartha took his first seven steps here, in the sacred garden of Lumbini. Buddhists believe Queen Mayadevi gave birth to him while holding the branch of a sal tree, about 2,600 years ago. Today you can see the ancient Ashoka Pillar that marks his birthplace and sit by the quiet Pushkarni Pool. Most visitors spend a few hours here.
