A lodge base in the Solu foothills, with Everest far off on the skyline on clear days.

This is a sample private itinerary, not a fixed departure. Sam and Gyalgin plan the route, pace and stays around you before you book. Walking times and transfer allowances are estimates. Weather can change the plan and mountain views are not guaranteed.

Spend four nights near Phaplu, returning to the same lodge rather than moving from camp to camp. Two quiet mountain nights come before a higher viewpoint day. Four Kathmandu nights provide time for the valley and a return-travel buffer.

Solu offers a distant Everest skyline in clear weather, not the closer Khumbu view. This Easy sample uses short village walks and a viewpoint chosen to fit your walking limit. The standard Ratnange approach is about 2.5 hours uphill, with the return still to come. That hike is not part of this short-walk plan. We agree the viewpoint, access and any walking before you book.

Plan for a small lodge with a private room and lodge dining, plus a Kathmandu hotel. We discuss the bathroom, heating and room layout with you and put the chosen standard in your written plan. No named lodge, private camp or outdoor dinner is promised.

High-altitude travel can cause serious illness, even in fit travelers. Acclimatization reduces risk but cannot eliminate it. Tell your guide promptly about symptoms. Your guide may stop an ascent, change the route or arrange descent. Rescue and medical treatment depend on location, weather, access and available resources and cannot be guaranteed.

Comprehensive travel insurance is a condition of every booking. Your policy must cover emergency medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and interruption, and repatriation. Confirm with your insurer that it covers your itinerary's activities and maximum altitude, including technical climbing, rafting, helicopter evacuation and search and rescue where applicable. Provide proof before departure. Consider obtaining cover when you book because some benefits have purchase deadlines.

  • Private journey deposit: 30% of the trip price for bookings more than 90 days before departure
  • Final balance: Due 90 days before departure. Bookings made 90 days or fewer before departure are paid in full at booking.
  • Our conditions promise: A qualifying Nepal advisory change or trek-region closure within 60 days of departure lets you move dates free or take full credit for 24 months.

9 Days in Solu and Kathmandu

Days 1-2: Kathmandu

Day 3: Travel to Phaplu

Day 4: Quiet day around the lodge

Day 5: A viewpoint outing planned around your walking limit

Day 6: Village and monastery interests

Day 7: Return to Kathmandu

Day 8: Return-travel buffer or a short city visit

Day 9: Departure

Day by Day

This is a sample private itinerary, not a fixed departure. Sam and Gyalgin plan the route, pace and stays around you before you book. Walking times and transfer allowances are estimates. Weather can change the plan and mountain views are not guaranteed.

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu

Transfer to the hotel and settle in. Discuss walking preferences, altitude and the mountain transfer. Walking: 0-0.5 hour. Sleep and daytime high: about 1,400 m. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Kathmandu Valley

Choose short temple or courtyard visits, with no mandatory long stair climb. Walking: 1-2 hours in optional segments. Sleep: about 1,400 m; daytime high depends on the sites chosen. Dinner at the hotel or an agreed restaurant.

Day 3: Travel to Phaplu

The sample uses a Phaplu flight and lodge transfer, with rest on arrival. We agree the available flight or road plan before booking. A road option can take roughly 10 hours by 4WD and changes the day; it is not a quick substitute or an included helicopter. Walking: 0.5-1 gentle hour. Sleep and day high: about 2,400 m. Meals at the lodge.

Day 4: Settle into Solu

A quiet day near the lodge with short optional village walks. No strenuous high outing in the first mountain days. Walking: 0.5-1 hour. Sleep and daytime high: near the 2,400 m base. Meals at the lodge.

Day 5: A viewpoint suited to you

Choose a vehicle-supported outing with a short final walk when planning the trip. The sample walking target is 0.5-1 hour total, not the usual Ratnange hike. The final viewpoint and high point depend on the access and walking limit agreed. Planning ceiling: about 3,350 m for a day visit. Return to the lodge before evening and sleep around 2,400 m. Meals at the lodge, not an outdoor ridge dinner.

Day 6: Village and monastery time

Plan a village visit and, if it fits your walking limit and local access, Chiwong monastery. Its usual walking approach includes a climb, so it is not a promised easy stop. Target walking: 1-2 hours with vehicle support where available. Sleep: about 2,400 m; the agreed outing stays below the 3,350 m planning ceiling. Meals at the lodge.

Day 7: Return to Kathmandu

Use the flight or road return agreed in the plan. Flight timing depends on conditions; the road option is a long transfer. Walking: 0-0.5 hour. Sleep around 1,400 m after returning; start around 2,400 m. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: A day left open

Keep this day for a delayed mountain return. If back on time, choose a short Kathmandu outing or rest. Walking: 0-1.5 hours. Sleep around 1,400 m once returned. Dinner indoors.

Day 9: Departure

Transfer to the airport after returning from the mountains. Walking: 0-0.5 hour. No overnight stay. An extended delay may require changing the international departure.

From $7,175 per person. Based on two travelers sharing a room. International flights are not included. Final price depends on dates and the plan agreed.

Included in the sample price

A sample plan, made private

Four nights at a Solu lodge base, with short village walks and time for a distant mountain skyline. A sample private plan shaped around your walking limit.

Lead photo: Salyan terraces in the Solu foothills.

  • Longest walking day: Short walks, usually up to 2 hours
  • Highest overnight: About 2,400 m (7,874 ft)
  • Daytime high point: About 3,350 m (10,991 ft), day visit
  • Transport: Phaplu flight or separately agreed road transfer; local vehicle support

Before you choose

Short walks are the starting point, not the usual 2.5-hour Ratnange climb plus return. The viewpoint and final approach are selected around your walking limit before booking. High-point allowance about 3,350 m; lodge nights about 2,400 m. Altitude risk still matters.

What a private plan changes

Your party travels on its own plan. We discuss your dates, walking limits and interests, then work through the route and room choices with you. A day at the lodge can take the place of an optional outing.

Private does not mean the trail or mountain belongs to you. Weather, access and altitude still set limits. On the Everest trek, the steep Namche climb is part of the route and rest time cannot be traded for a faster ascent.

Luggage handling, vehicle approaches and flight arrangements are set out in the plan before you book. You do not have to design the trip from scratch.

Stays and meals

The samples use private lodge rooms in the mountains and a hotel in Kathmandu, not a moving camp. Tell us what matters most to you, such as bathroom arrangements, room heating or how many steps lead to the room. We put the chosen room standard in your plan.

Meals are at the lodge, with menus and dietary needs discussed while planning. These are lodge-based trips, not private camps or outdoor ridge dinners.

Two travelers sharing a room are the basis of the from prices. A single room, an extra buffer night or a changed route can change the quote.

One quiet day in Solu

A sample of day 4 near Phaplu, after arriving the day before. You sleep around 2,400 m and keep the day close to the lodge, rather than rushing to a high viewpoint.

  • Morning: A short walk, if you want one. After breakfast, take a gentle village walk of about half an hour to an hour, or stay at the lodge. There is no long hill climb on this day.
  • Afternoon and evening: Time back at the lodge. Rest in the afternoon and have dinner at the lodge. The higher viewpoint outing comes later and is planned around your walking limit. A clear mountain skyline is a possibility, not a promise.

Plan with our family

Sam and Gyalgin Sherpa, son and father, run SherpaHolidays. Sam is based in the US. You speak with the family about the trip, not a call center.

Gyalgin worked on Everest. His father, San Tsopel Sherpa, helped Hillary's school-building work.

Sam's grandfather, Gyalgin's father, San Tsopel Sherpa: Cooked for Sir Edmund Hillary and his team throughout their work building schools for the Sherpa community.

Things guests ask before booking

Straight answers about walking, altitude and how we plan this trip.

  • No. Solu offers a distant Everest skyline when conditions allow. The closer Khumbu view belongs to the Everest View Lodge Trek, which requires several hours of uphill walking.

  • The normal Ratnange approach is about 2.5 hours uphill plus the return. That is not part of this Easy short-walk sample. We discuss the viewpoint, vehicle approach and total walking before you book.

  • The sample uses a lodge near Phaplu and a Kathmandu hotel, with private rooms and meals at the lodge. The specific stay, bathroom and heating standard are agreed before booking. There is no private camp or outdoor ridge dinner.

  • We agree the transport and disruption plan before booking. A road alternative can be roughly 10 hours by 4WD, not a short transfer. A helicopter is not included. The Kathmandu buffer makes room for delays but does not guarantee a flight.

  • No. The sample sleeps around 2,400 m and has a higher day-visit allowance around 3,350 m. We discuss your altitude history and walking limit, and you should seek individual advice from a clinician familiar with altitude travel.

  • Yes, we use this sample as a starting point and discuss dates, pace and room preferences. The final quote depends on the plan and availability. This is an inquiry, not a booking.

  • Solu and Pokhara are short-walk tour plans. Pokhara uses roads between hill stays, with mostly optional walks of up to two hours. Solu uses a lodge base and a viewpoint selected around your walking limit. Uneven ground and steps can still be involved. Neither is described as wheelchair-accessible.

  • Solu plans to sleep around 2,400 m, with a viewpoint allowance up to about 3,350 m. Pokhara plans to sleep around 2,012 m at its highest lodge, with a high-point allowance about 2,050 m. Everest View sleeps at 3,440 m and visits 3,880 m for the day. Exact Solu and Pokhara elevations depend on the final route and lodge. Sleeping lower after a day visit does not remove altitude risk.

  • No. These are sample plans, not scheduled departures. Mountain views and flights depend on conditions. We agree the transport plan, buffer time and disruption costs before booking. Solu and Everest include return-travel buffer time; the eight-day Pokhara sample has no spare Kathmandu buffer day, so discuss an extra night before ticketing.

  • Tell us the time of year, who is traveling and how much walking feels comfortable. Room and bathroom preferences help too. The inquiry costs nothing. Sam or Gyalgin replies personally, then discusses fit and the plan with you before a final quote.
